Latin America and the Caribbean has become the region hardest-hit in terms of deaths related to Covid-19, while India has surpassed two million cases of infection
The world's worst-affected region has reported 213,120 fatalities, 460 more than Europe, according to an AFP tally based on official data.
India's cases have doubled in three weeks, reaching two million yesterday following a record daily jump of more than 60,000 new infections.Official figures show the world's second most populous nation has also recorded 41,500 deaths. However, there have been some positive indicators in Africa, where health authorities warned against complacency amid hopes that the pandemic is peaking in some parts of the continent.
Up to 100 million Covid-19 vaccine doses could be made available for poorer countries by 2021, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, announced. Over the last week, 44% of global fatalities from Covid-19 - 18,300 out of 41,500 - occurred in the region.
