The government has decided to bring in new mask-wearing rules for children aged nine and up in primary schools across the country
The Irish government has decided to bring in new mask-wearing rules for children aged nine and up in primary schools across the country as we battle the fourth surge of infection here. Aside from an education setting, this age group will also be required to wear a face-covering on public transport, in retail, and in other indoor public settings.
Parents have been hitting out at the new rules, with some suggesting they will ring their GP for a medical certificate for their children to be exempt. Although there are many reasons why kids do not want to wear a covering over their face while in school, there are actually very few ‘medical’ reasons for an exemption. According to health officials, a medical certificate to exempt a child from wearing a mask must show that: It’s understood that if a young student turns up to school not wearing one - and does not have a medical cert detailing the reasons why - that pupil will be sent home. Minister for Education, Norma Foley had suggested that kids could be evaluated by their GP for exemptions for things like glasses, however, a number of General Practitioners have been hitting out on social media over the advice. One GP in Co Louth, Dr. Amy Morgan, wrote on Twitter: “We will need clarification from @roinnslainte @HSELive that nobody should be contacting GP for medical certificates for exemption for mask-wearing.“Managing huge increased demand on Covid queries & PCR referrals & all other work.
