More than 10,000 ballots were rejected in the state's largest counties in Tuesday's midterm election, making for a rejection rate of about 4 percent, according to preliminary data from the secretary of state's office.
Pam Gaskin, 75, of Missouri City, Texas, said it took her three tries and 28 days to receive her ballot and vote. She struggled to match her ID number, a requirement of Texas’ new law that is to blame for some of the more than 24,000 mail ballot applications that were rejected in the March 1 primary election.
The law — passed by Texas Republicans in 2021 in the name of election integrity — requires voters to include a state ID number, such as a driver’s license or a partial Social Security number, when applying for a mail-in ballot and when submitting their ballot. The ID number on the ballot has to match what is on the voter’s registration record, a detail many voters may not recall..
After the primaries, many counties began including inserts in their mail-in ballot kits reminding voters to provide an ID number under the flap on the carrier envelope. The secretary of state's office also launched an education campaign in English and Spanish and among seniors and disabled voters, Taylor said, all of which likely contributed to the decrease.
