10,000 Steps a Day: Marketing Myth or Healthy Goal?
10000 StepsMarketing Myth

Dr. Rangan Chatterjee debunks the 10,000-step myth, highlighting the origins of the target and emphasizing the importance of any movement over no movement. He encourages incorporating more physical activity into daily routines, exploring the benefits of walking and other forms of exercise.

The widely promoted goal of 10, 000 steps a day may be nothing more than a marketing myth , according to leading doctor Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. On his podcast, Feel Better, Live More, Dr. Chatterjee discussed the origins of the 10,000-step target with paleoanthropologist Dr. Daniel Lieberman. Dr. Lieberman revealed that the number originated from a Japanese accelerometer developed in 1964, just before the Tokyo Olympics.

The company Yamasa chose 10,000 as their target step count because it was considered an auspicious number in Japanese culture. This led to the creation of the Manpo-Kei, the world's first wearable step-counter, which translates to '10,000-step meter'. Dr. Chatterjee cautions against obsessing over a specific step count, emphasizing that any amount of physical activity is better than none. He stresses that 'anything is better than nothing' and encourages people to incorporate more movement into their daily lives. Whether it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from their destination, or simply going for a walk, every step counts. While 10,000 steps may not be a scientifically backed requirement, regular physical activity, including walking, offers significant health benefits. Studies have shown that walking for as little as 4,000 steps a day can reduce the risk of premature death, while 30 minutes of daily walking can aid in weight loss. Nordic walking, a technique using poles, can even burn 20% more calories. Ultimately, the key takeaway is to prioritize movement and aim for a healthy level of physical activity that suits your individual needs and lifestyle
