Israeli warplanes carry out airstrikes near Gaza's largest hospital, destroying roads and endangering patients and Palestinians seeking shelter. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announces the expansion of attacks against Hamas, warning of a long and difficult war.

Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes early on Sunday near Gaza’s largest hospital, which is packed with patients and tens of thousands of Palestinians seeking shelter, residents said

Communications were slowly coming back online on Sunday, however. Bombardment by the Israeli army on Gaza on Friday night – described by residents in north Gaza as the most intense of the war – knocked out most communications in the territory and largely cut off the enclave’s 2.3 million people from the world.

Mr Netanyahu told the nationally televised news conference that Israel is determined to bring back all the hostages, maintaining that the expanding ground operation “will help us in this mission” – but he would not give further details. The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict, of what it said was the “intolerable level of human suffering”.The immediate imperative must be to save lives & preserve humanity.Nebal Farsakh, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent, said no aid trucks entered Gaza on Saturday because of the communication blackout.
