The colour red has always been associated with passion – it’s the colour of blood, symbolising love, life and death. In the gemstone world, there’s nothing so associated with red as the ruby. Long linked with prosperity and protection, the Ancient Burmese regarded it as the stone of soldiers, while in Hindu culture, it is known as the king of gems.
Elizabeth Taylor was famously gifted a suite of diamond and ruby jewels from Cartier by her husband Mike Todd whilst mid-swim in the South of France, charmingly caught on home video. A whopping 32-carat ruby ring by Chaumet from the collection of billionaire philanthropist Lily Safra broke auction records when it sold at Christie’s in 2012, and Princess Margaret’s engagement ring was a trio of rubies surrounded by diamonds.
