Two of a Kind: The 2 Johnnies get real about fame, their close friendship, and being banned from playing hurling while on TV in the December 2023 issue of RSVP Magazine
At the heart of The 2 Johnnies’ success is their undying friendship. Johnny Smacks and Johnny B were friends before they found fame with their podcast and they will be friends afterwards.
You were a butcher before this, was that tough going? No, not really, not the way I did it . I don’t work hard at anything! The bosses were sound and it was mostly just chatting. When you are trying to sell an idea to someone these days, it is quite easy when you used to sell mince. B: We remind ourselves to have a good time. When we’re fighting over scripts and other things we remind ourselves that we used to have real jobs.
Do you get flack on the street or do you get knickers thrown at you like Daniel O’Donnell does? B: I haven’t had any knickers thrown at me in a while now. Has anyone like Oliver Callan or Mario Rosenstock done an impression of you? Smacks: Oliver does an impression of us. He does both of us, but I can’t figure out which one I am. Mario hasn’t done us. We’re friends with Conor Sketches and we asked him to do us and he said we were too hard to do.Are you still playing hurling? Smacks: We can’t contractually play hurling while our chat show is on RTÉ in case we get our faces broken.
You came from a podcast where you could do what you want, does it ever affect your ego when producers don’t let you do what you want? B: If you come into a meeting with 100 ideas, 90 of them will be shot down so you need a thick skin. That makes things better, you need to be able to stand up every item.We have had a lot of Dublin presenters on screen before, but you’re proud GAA and “culchie” men. Smacks: We’re proud to be from the country, but that goes against us.
