The Corner House pub in Wrightington had been earmarked for destruction

Developers wanted to demolish the Corner House pub in Wrightington, on the edge of West Lancashire and Wigan, arguing it was no longer viable as a business. The pub has been closed since 2021 and the owners says efforts to sell it proved unfruitful.

It has been present in the village for almost 200 years and previously traded under names including The Scarisbrick Arms and The Mulberry Tree. Those living nearby were dismayed by the prospect of it being torn down and a flurry of objections were received. Others raised concerns over the potential for urban sprawl, with this development leading to others and the boundaries between nearby villages being lost. David Sunter wrote: "There are no amenities and very poor transport links. This property is the hub of the local community just like a village hall, and was used by all the residents as a meeting place."
