When the Romans first arrived in Lincoln in the first century, they were struck by two promising geographic features - a hill and an inland pool.

However, people may have visited there even longer back. The Witham Shield, an ornate Iron Age artefact from 300BC, was found a few miles down the Witham, indicating people have always been drawn to large pools of water. The walls of the Roman fort were gradually extended downhill to the Brayford. Lucy Tower Street marks the extent, now the site of the multi-storey car park and cinema.

However, the waterways eventually brought prosperity to Lincoln again. Wool was England's key export, and was traded all along the Witham. Soon, the pool was lined with warehouses, mills and breweries, bringing commerce and industry to the city on a scale never seen before. The peak of this came in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Influential Lincoln architect Sam Scorer had a hand in some of the new buildings that went up, designing unique Lincolnshire Motor Company Showrooms with their unusual parabolic roof, and the Lucy Tower Car Park. The area became a hive of construction. Former railways buildings were reincarnated as the Engine Shed venue and the university library.
