2022 election: Q&A with Rebecca Kanter, candidate for Superior Court Judge, Office 35 [Opinion]

A: I have been an assistant U.S. attorney for over 15 years, with most of my career spent prosecuting complex financial crimes and public corruption. I have tried over 25 federal felony cases, written 18 appellate briefs and argued at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals six times. Through my education and professional background, I have gained skills essential for a judge, including a fluent command of the rules of evidence, a capacity to learn quickly in new areas and a patient temperament.

A graduate of UCLA School of Law, I started my legal career as a District Court law clerk. I worked for two years at O’Melveny & Myers LLP practicing civil and criminal defense before becoming a federal prosecutor.A: I am running for San Diego Superior Court judge to promote justice, fairness and equality, and to help ensure an independent judiciary that protects the rule of law and democracy.

Q: What is your judicial philosophy? What are the guiding principles that will shape your rulings or beliefs as a judge?A: As mentioned above, my judicial ambitions were inspired in part from reading “The Courage of Their Convictions” by Peter Irons.

A: As a judge pro tem in small claims court, I have seen how the ability to appear virtually can increase access to justice. For example, it enables people to make their appearance in court without having to take a day off work. For parties or witnesses who speak English as a second language and rely on family or friends to interpret for them in court, the burden of having to come to court in person increases exponentially, and the ability to appear virtually can have significant benefits.

A: One of the transformative moments for me coming out of George Floyd’s murder happened in the aftermath of the guilty verdict in Derek Chauvin’s trial. At a press event following the verdict, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison observed that the verdict was not justice “because justice implies there is restoration. But it is accountability, which is the first step toward justice.”
