Does this upscale, weird sedan make its occupants feel like royals?
The Crown lacks a power trunk option but attempts to attract buyers with inimitable style and an all-hybrid lineup.Put simply, the 2023 Toyota Crown's interior isn't as adventurous as the exterior. Our early experience behind the wheel of multiple prototypes suggests the Crown should be built to the same high standard we've come to expect from the brand, but when your sedan starts at over $40,000, you want a little luxury, too.
Our favorite detail is probably the way the spear of copper-colored trim stretches across the dash to partially bisect the backward"C" rendered in similar materials around the passenger-side air vent.That copper color is sprinkled throughout the interior, although we wish the silver door handles matched. Even so, we give Toyota credit for adding matching seat piping down to the base XLE trim.
In truth, most folks will instead focus on the enormous interior screens. Even the base 2023 Crown XLE gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display as well as a 12.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment setup. The latter is easy to use and has standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The digital instrument cluster has layers of customizability—both the info layout and style are changeable—but it's just difficult enough to update that you'll probably pick the setup you like once and leave it alone. VW's system is easier to change, but the beautiful Arteon four-door's smaller infotainment screen is mounted too low on the dash.More than any one feature, the 2023 Crown lacks the upscale feel we look for in a sedan that in Platinum form costs well over $50,000.
For example, the 2023 Crown's dark center console trim looks fine with its sparkly accents, but it lacks the ambitious design of the Avalon. That sedan had leather-like material in generally the same space with a design that smoothly transitioned from console to dash. The 2023 Crown still gets plenty right as soon as you look beyond the boring door panels. The squishy armrest materials and plentiful storage up front are great.
