The next logical step in the evolution of the provincial series is complete decoupling from the All-Ireland series, by which time the draws hardly command a radio slot, never mind television.
Once broadcast on prime time TV with a studio audience, the 2024 provincial draws take place on Saturday afternoon during a packed radio slot.
To be fair, the new football format this year did add a much-needed layer of excitement to the early rounds of the provinces with the jeopardy of the Tailteann Cup hanging over several counties. The shock move of Mickey Harte to Derry and the prospect of his new charges pairing off with his native Tyrone or Donegal, following the return of Jim McGuinness, has brought extra spice to next year’s competition.A seven-team competition given the exiles of New York and London’s participation, and their opening round fixtures are already preordained by an existing rota: Mayo will travel to New York next year while Galway go to London in two of the quarter-finals.
Despite that occurrence, there are no restrictions to the draw outside of the New York-Mayo and London-Galway ties, though that alone means that the four lowest-ranked teams in the competition cannot all end up on the same side once again this year.
