15 large urban areas including Dublin, Cork and Limerick are failing to meet EU waste water regulations designed to protect the environment.

Some 26 Irish towns and villages are still pouring raw sewage into rivers, lakes and coastal waters every day, says the Environmental Protection Agency .The stark statistics were revealed in the EPA’s latest Urban Waste Water Treatment report which found over half of Ireland’s discharges fail to comply with EU regulations enacted three decades ago. Waste water discharges heap considerable pressure on many rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters with 39 areas needing urgent intervention.

A rise to 90 per cent, however, is expected when the €550m upgrade of Ringsend treatment plant in Dublin is finished in 2025. And that state-owned utility firm Uisce Eireann is not meeting its obligation to assess the impact of waste water on shellfish and resolve any issues - with 23 shellfish waters “long overdue”.

In a nutshell Shellfish assessments also need to be completed alongside better information on storm water overflows and all treatment systems need to be operated effectively to get the best from them according to the EPA. Its programme manager, Noel Byrne, said: “It is welcome that Uisce Éireann is currently building infrastructure at large urban areas, including Ringsend and Arklow, which are designed to treat waste water to a high standard.
