, who was fatally stabbed in her Manhattan apartment, Chi texted us to start a conversation about what we were feeling. That was part of community care. In continuing this open conversation, I noted that the goal wasn’t to come up with any answers but to have a space for us to be in collective thought. The answers won’t come from any one person but from joining together in pursuit of the common goal: our community’s safety and how to care for each other.

I've seen people warm up with time. I know that this work all takes time. It takes bringing people into our space but what if that time is now, right? I need you to care about my communityI think that's part of my grief. I just want you to see my community and see their humanity. It feels so crazy to just be demanding that basic aspect of care.

In an ideal world, when I think about safety, I think about being carefree. That feeling of not having to think about or worry about how to get home or figuring out what I'm going to do if something does happen. Having the privilege not to really think about that.I got pregnant at the beginning of the pandemic and I remember that also coincided with all the new attacks. And then after months of being pregnant, I just stopped going outside. I did not walk alone.
