Celtic overcome Hatate and Carter-Vickers blows as they outgun Aberdeen in Pittodrie classic – 3 talking points

It was a belter of a game in Pittodrie as Matt O'Riley capped off a 3-1 win for Celtic against a youthful Aberdeen team who refused to lie down.

The two sides continued to trade chances for the remainder of the first half and at the break it should have been a far higher-scoring encounter than it was, both teams attacking with fervour but neither defence looking especially sharp. The two combined well down the left and it was Yang who played the ball across to Matt O'Riley who struck the killer blow at the back post.

The need for defensive reinforcements at Parkhead was highlighted even further when Carter-Vickers went off with an injury to be replaced by Stephen Welsh, who looked rusty and unsure of himself on his return to the team. Gustaf Lagerbielke is due to travel out this week and Rodgers will be hoping he can hit the ground running immediately.

While Kwon was nowhere to be seen in the squad, a reflection on his difficult pre-season, his South Korea teammate Yang was called upon and he laid on the assist for O'Riley's crucial third goal. But that only came after some excellent work from Holm who stepped into Hatate's shoes in midfield and looks another promising option in the engine room.
