Much-changed Rangers huffed and puffed before making the quarter finals of the Viaplay Cup after Morton gave them the fright of their lives at Ibrox.
But it took 14 minutes to work Jamie MacDonald in the Morton and when they did the keeper produced a superb instinct save to deny Dessers, whose touch on the chest and volley from Dujon Sterling’s cross was terrific. The half ended with a fine save from MacDonald to deny Kieran Dowell’s sweetly struck free kick and Morton would have gone in delighted with their efforts. They’d have been even happier had Butland not clawed George Oakley’s effort out of the top corner two minues after the restart - and they were much happier when Dessers’ challenge on Broadfoot from the resultant corner was given as a penalty after VAR stepped in.
Dessers made a great job of it and with an hour gone it was level. Seven minutes later, Rangers were in front after Dessers robbed Gillespie in midfield and set up Danilo to drill his shot under MacDonald. Abdallah Sima hit the bar but Rangers couldn't add to their tally and it was Morton pushing for the leveller in injury time but couldn't find the net.
