A 3-year-old child was hospitalized for a gunshot wound on Saturday after Phoenix officers responded to shots being fired.

A 3-year-old child was hospitalized for a gunshot wound on Saturday after Phoenix officers responded to shots being fired near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road.

When officers arrived at about 3:30 p.m., they found a child with a gunshot wound, police said. The child was conscious and transported to a hospital. The child remained hospitalized and in critical condition as of 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to Sgt. Phil Krynsky, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department.

"Preliminary information suggests the incident was accidental and self-inflicted; however, the investigation is active," Krynsky said.
