International medics call for the site to be shut, saying three quarters of residents are in 'severe psychological distress'in Essex have suicidal thoughts and three quarters are in “severe psychological distress”, according to medical evidence from doctors supporting them.
“Our medical findings show that more than 74 per cent of our patients presented with severe psychological distress, with a staggering 41 per cent experiencing suicidal ideation, as well as deliberate self-harm and suicide attempts,” an MSF spokesperson said. While asylum seekers are able to leave the centre freely, they have repeatedly claimed it is isolated, and charity workers have described it as “prison-like” due to its remote location and security measures.
“It is hugely disturbing that doctors are finding that victims of war, violence and terror are being subjected to failings in safeguarding and conditions that are exacerbating their psychological distress,” he said. “The longer people are staying, the worse the deterioration in mental health.
