'Football is the least of your worries' a doctor told him in 2019.
show, just a few years ago he was dangerously close to a potentially terminal cancer diagnosis that stemmed from an alleged lack of oversight by the team doctors of his former squad.
Williams first felt a bump on his head in 2014, five years prior to his cancer diagnosis, but says he was told by the Washington Commanders' team doctor it was likely just a cyst and there was nothing to worry about. As time passed, Williams says he underwent other medical procedures on his knee and thumb and asked that they"kill two birds with one stone" by removing the"cyst," too. Each time, he said, doctors declined to do so.
A specialist removed one of the growths, and Williams soon learned it wasn't a cyst — it was a tumor. He says the team doctor initially tried to assuage Williams and let him know the tumor was probably benign, but that too didn't hold up to scrutiny. Williams realized the seriousness of the situation after he scheduled an appointment with an oncologist, at which point he broke down in tears, he remembers.
From there, the situation deteriorated further. Williams was finally given an MRI, which revealed the full extent of how much the cancer had already spread. Williams visited another doctor, assuming his football career might be over, but the doctor told him,"football is the least of your worries." Williams says the doctor told him to get his affairs in order and spend as much time as possible with his children, who hadn't learned of the cancer diagnosis yet. But as it turned out, Williams was exceedingly lucky — the cancer hadn't fully metastasized through his skull as was feared, and doctors were able to effectively treat it.
