The topic of abortion has continued to divide Hoosiers. Governor Holcomb saw nearly every opinion under the sun sent to him. Here are five takeaways from the messages to the Governor.
Abortion-rights supporters return to the Indiana Statehouse to protest on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.Indiana's near-total abortion ban last month within hours of its passage, he ignored the opinions of a majority of Hoosiers who had reached out to his office via email.
"The number of emails received is but only one example of registering constituent input," Holcomb said."After reviewing this specific majority passed piece of legislation, I could in all good conscience sign it and did."Senate Bill 1, which went into effect Thursday, Sept.
Both Nisly and Jacob lost their Republican primaries and will leave the legislature near the end of this year, but their influence among the most vocal abortion opponents was seen in the letters. The pair was mentioned in 89 of the roughly 250 letters sent from Hoosiers who are anti-abortion.
More than 280 constituents sent what appeared to be form letters or slight variations of one from the ACLU, asking that abortion remain safe and accessible in the state. Some expanded further on their personal choices and others kept to the statement. The letters referenced a 2020 phone survey conducted by Washington, D.C.-based research firm Lake River Partner for the ACLU of Indiana.
"Biology tells us that life begins at conception and children in the womb are fully human," they wrote."The time has come to end abortion here in Indiana!"In the more than 100 emails to the governor from SB 1’s proposal and the end of session, many mothers shared stories of abortions, miscarriages and other trials of pregnancy in addition to wishes for their own daughters to have choice.
As a wife and mother, she said Senate Bill 1 terrified her and it would allow the state to have influence over her medical appointments. She asked the governor to keep abortion legal. “I know they will shine bright in this world,” she wrote. “This story could have had a completely different ending if abortion was banned.”Various members of the medical community also discussed impacts to the care and rights of their patients in letters to Holcomb.
