CHELSEA 2-0 TOTTENHAM: Goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson earn the Blues a much needed three points in their bid for Europe to dent Spurs' top-four hopes
Chelsea dealt a huge blow to Tottenham's Champions League hopes and boosted their own chances of finishing in Europe with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham, who were dismal during the first period, improved at the start of the second-half and looked better after Ange Postecoglou made a triple substitution, but their task of getting back into the game got much tougher when Chelsea doubled their lead. In the 72nd minute, Nicolas Jackson scored after Cole Palmer's strike came back off the bar.
It was a fine header from the 24-year-old, who had to wait around four minutes for the goal to be officially given after a lengthy VAR check as they checked for offside and a foul in the build up. Nevertheless, once it was awarded, Chalobah could properly celebrate his first goal since March 2022. But before the interval, Postecoglou appeared to cut a frustrated figure. He was seen shouting instructions to his players and looking particularly unimpressed with midfield duo Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma. The Aussie seemed to get a slight reaction as Spurs improved as the half wore on.
Maddison dropped After struggling for form and directly contributing to just three goals in his last 12 appearances since recovering from injury, James Maddison was left out of the starting XI against Chelsea. It's the first time Maddison had been named on the bench for a Premier League game since his move to Tottenham.
