If you’re unsure, ask about the salary band for the role.

What’s the hardest question to answer during a job interview? Here are a few common ones that I find especially difficult:But … the most nerve-wracking question of all might just be: What are your salary expectations?

When I was interviewing for my first job and this question was thrown at me, I froze. Not knowing what to say, I responded “What are you willing to pay for this role?” That was a big mistake. I realized much later that I had started on a lower salary than two other candidates who joined the company at the same time as me. The difference between us? They had negotiated.

I clearly remember my very first response to this question during a job interview: “Currently, at this juncture of my career, learning and the quality of work matters far more than the compensation. So, I will be okay with the standard salary offered by the organization.” It’s also in your benefit to show the hiring manager that you’re flexible by saying something like, “I’m really excited about this opportunity, and open to discussing it further.” This shows that you’re a reasonable person who’s willing to compromise .

I loved the job, but it was difficult. I worked long hours both in and out of the lab. The salary was not sustainable. Knowing what I know now, I should have responded, “What is the salary band for this position?” In other words, the low-end and top end of what an organization is willing to pay someone for that position. Believe it or not, some organizations will disclose this information.

I am a firm believer in asking for what I want. How will I get what I want if I don’t ask for it? Think of it this way: If the hiring manager wants to hire you, then it is HR’s job to close the deal. If a placejust outright reject me for giving too high of a salary, is that a place I would even want to work?5) Use the opportunity to ask about the entire benefits package.
