If Rovers win against Vikingur then they are guaranteed a minimum intake of €1.75m from Europe this season.

For Shamrock Rovers, that the difference between winning and losing tomorrow night’s Champions League tie is an amazing €790,000.Put simply, if Rovers lose to Icelandic side, Vikingur, tonight then their minimum earnings from Europe this season will be €960,000.Then there is the glory.

Boss Stephen Bradley said: “There’s no getting away from it, we know how important this first round game is in terms of the different routes it opens. “If we do our job and win the game we know what it opens up but it really is about focusing on what’s in front of us because lose tomorrow and that path that you’re so hung up on disappears.”

Bradley says: “Unless you are in the football world, the general public tends to just see Iceland as a small nation. “I said as much last year before the Breidablik tie and I think people thought I was telling a few fibs. Then they saw them live and their opinion changed. They thought, ‘this is a good team’.”
