This Fijian beach town, a favorite hideaway for wealthy Americans and Australians, evokes a bygone Hawaii
FROM THE MIDDLE
of the bay, looking back at the town of Savusavu, it’s easy to see why, for centuries, ship captains sought the shelter of that spot on Fiji’s second largest island to berth their vessels. The town’s marina is protected by a small, verdant island that sits opposite it in the bay and seems purpose-built to shield Savusavu from storms.
On a sizzling July morning, I found myself taking in that view from the deck of a speedboat, as we cruised out to look at oyster beds hidden in the depths of the vast Savusavu Bay. At the helm was Justin Hunter, co-founder of J. Hunter Pearls, a local business known for its naturally cultivated colored pearls. A friend of mine had introduced me to Mr. Hunter, who, though raised in Savusavu, had left to attend high school and university in Washington State, before learning the oyster trade there.
