Texas A&M drops heartbreaker in NIT final

The Aggies trailed 71-70 with 39 seconds remaining when A&M coach Buzz Williams called timeout. Jackson then drove the lane and was fouled with 27 seconds left. He made both free throws, and the Aggies led 72-71. Xavier 7-footer Jack Nunge then followed with a wild one-handed bank shot in a crowded lane for a 73-72 Musketeers lead with 3.1 seconds left.
Had the Aggies defeated Tennessee, they would have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, making for a successful season right there. Most bracket prognosticators had the Aggies in the NCAA Tournament regardless, even after they lost eight straight games in the middle of SEC play, but they were one of the first four teams left out.
“I’ve never experienced anything like what has transpired with our team the last six weeks,” said Williams, adding he was proud of how the players and coaches trusted and believed in each other throughout.
