Downtown ballpark a field of dreams for developers — but would public benefit?
. “For the last 10 years, I’ve told them that there will be no downtown stadium unless you get local partners or unless you sell to local partners,” Wolff said.
The group set up a company called Designated Bidders LLC in April to make the acquisition, which is expected to close later this month. Wolff, who’s retiring as the county’s top elected official at the end of this year, says he’s followed the buyers’ progress, but at arm’s length. He claims to know the identities of only a few of the investors.
The firm’s projects include the high-end Frost Tower, the first new office tower in downtown San Antonio since 1989, and a pair of developments with over 600 apartments combined, a major infusion of rental housing in the central business district. One possible location for the new stadium is near the northern section of San Pedro Creek Culture Park, the first portion of the creek to be beautified and lined with walking paths and public art. Weston Urban has acquired 3.3 acres there, within walking distance of the firm’s other holdings.
But sources familiar with the investors’ plans said they’ll almost certainly seek public funding for the stadium.
