Whoever's decision it was to make Ronda Rousey versus Shayna Baszler a "MMA Rules match" needs to rethink some things. Both competitors have real world accolades, sure, but the pace of MMA just doesn't jibe with everything else going on. Too slow, too many breaks, no spots for emoting.
The crowd sounded very quiet going into that match — and I thought the build was actually good, with Baszler gaining some momentum as a crowd favorite. Professional wrestling includes grappling, but it needs to be mindful of the theatrics, too. The match format only served to turn what was a personal rivalry with hints of reality into something bland.
Coming into the match, I thought Baszler versus Rhea Ripley — who hasn't had a legitimate challenger for her title in a while — would have been interesting. Now, it's almost like they'd have to build Baszler back up following whatever that was.
