From coping with overwhelm to managing mistakes and fallouts, experts share simple tips for getting your life back on track
“Ask yourself, is everything actually a mess, or does it just feel like that to you? The curse of ‘comparisonitis’ – comparing yourself to others’ seemingly perfect lives – can be a drag. Letting go of thatis one of the quickest ways to start seeing a real change in your circumstances. Not just asking for help but accepting help when it is offered are important steps towards.
“Like managing an email inbox, it is important to stay on top. Giving yourself 20 minutes a day to sit down and list all the niggling worries that have beencan help to give you back a sense of control. It’s always worse in your head; if you can get things down on paper, it is easier to make sense of your next steps.”“When life feels overwhelming, the first step is to break down problems into smaller, manageable tasks. Start by prioritising what needs attention and take one small step at a time.
“Many people feel disorganised or like they’re not doing what they want in life because they don’t know what it is they do want from life. Like plastic bags in the wind, we fly from task to task, usually in service of another’s agenda, and often without really consciously choosing something for ourselves. It can help to make a list of goals we have for ourselves and then pick a few priorities. Sometimes too much choice can be overwhelming, so a ‘top list’ can help focus our minds.
“The biggest mistake with closure is waiting for it – sometimes, you are waiting for a train that’s never coming. The goal is to create it. One method I use with clients is writing a closure letter – not to send, but for yourself. Research supports this as a way toeffectively. In the letter, express everything you need to say, including how you choose to move forward. To symbolise letting go, destroy the letter – burn, shred or delete it.
“Humans are biologically programmed for connection – those with deep social support tend to live happier, more productive lives. We adopt behaviours and form identities based on those around us. Surround yourself with people who live the life you aspire to. For example, ifis controlling your life, consider swapping your clubbing mates for running mates and watch your life transform through positive social influence.”“In today’s busy world, overwhelm is a common experience.
