City of Armagh, Queen's and Instonians won their leagues, and Clogher Valley moved up from junior rugby Sp PowerNI

By any measure, 2022-23 was a season of huge success for Ulster clubs in the Energia All-Ireland League.

There were individual awards too - Armagh's Ryan O'Neill picked up the 1B player of the season prize, while David Whitten and Rhys O'Donnell were recognised in 2A and 2C respectively, and Armagh's Chris Parker capped off a banner year for the club by collecting the Energia All-Ireland League Men’s Division Coach Of The Season gong.

“Before, we would have been a little apprehensive of going up, but I think now we've got the coaching team and the players in place to be able to compete and compete well in league 2C.” “It was basically a perfect season,” he says. “Played 18, 90 points out of 90. I don't think it's ever been done and I'm not sure it'll be done again, to be honest with you. We could never have imagined it.

Instagram Ahead of a first season in 1B, Queen’s University are looking to their peers in 1A, Trinity and UCD, as evidence of how you can sustain a student rugby club at the highest level. “I look at Trinity and UCD, particularly Trinity, and they're sitting mid-table in 1A. That's a goal for Queen's, and it's achievable.”

Seasons can turn on individual games, and for Parker and his squad an early win at Ulster rivals Banbridge set the tone for what was to come.
