Polvara took his chance when it came but had his head in his hands after VAR dealt a blow.
Dante Polvara knows Scottish football has had its issues with VAR since the technology was rolled out last season. But the painful Pittodrie Europa Conference League cock-up on Thursday night proved the set-up isn’t foolproof anywhere.
“It was just unlucky. I saw the penalty call in real time and there was definitely a claim to be made. We can’t point towards that in terms of the result because we were still in control. But VAR is there for a reason. It’s a bit iffy if they didn’t go to it at all. The knife was twisted when VAR stepped in to award PAOK a 96th minute penalty to win it – with Dons players raging at some of the celebrations after the final whistle. Polvara was gutted to be left with just one point after three games but he insisted there’s plenty to play for at Pittodrie.
“It will be tough to look back on but we have big games to come. We have the Viaplay Cup semi-final , which is a huge chance for silverware. And of course we need to keep chugging away in the league.” “It was painful. The boys are hurting but the best part is we have a game less than 72 hours later and it’s a chance to get back in the win column.
