“I’m contented,” says Willie Millar, a resident at ground-breaking LGBTQ+ retirement community Tonic Housing – you can tell he means it. A safe space for elders, away from homophobia that is sadly commonplace among pensioners who haven’t unlearnt prejudices they grew up with, moving in last year was a “huge release” for the 87-year-old Scot and former civil servant. “It’s wonderful. You don’t have to worry about what folks are going to think about you,” he says.

The decision was a long time coming. Rose had known she identified as female as young as nine, but had lived as a man until she divorced and retired in the early 2000s.
