Daniel Belling was accused of killing his Chinese wife Xing-Li (38) while on a cruise on the MSC Magnifica off the coast of Civitavecchia in February 2017 – but he insists he is innocent.
Accused killer Daniel Belling has admitted he may have to spend the next two decades fighting to clear his name.
And he says once he clears his name, he will pursue a compensation case against the Italian state for putting him through a seven-year ordeal. And he revealed he believed the process could take up to 20 years – but he was confident he would win. He said: “It could be 10 or 20 years – I think it will take that long. For the first phase, it took seven years. It is crazy. It should have been over after one year or two.”
Xing-Li disappeared while the family was on the cruise ship in February 2017 and Mr Belling initially said he hoped she was somehow still alive – but told us last year that he now feared she was dead. And when we asked him how the couple’s relationship was not good before she vanished. He said: “The relationship? Too many misunderstandings and cultural differences. I cannot recommend marrying someone who does not speak the same language.”
Mr Belling is accused of voluntary homicide as well as the destruction of a body in relation to the disappearance of his wife in the sea off the Italian port of Civitavecchia in 2017.
