The victim of a horror acid attack has told how she believes her attacker deliberately copied a previous incident in which she was also beaten and doused with boiling water.
“I’d made the mistake because I said to him that I'm so blessed to be alive because I ended up in an induced coma and I had to learn to walk again and talk again from the attack in 2016,” Simone told us. In that case the court heard Ms Lee suffered severe burns to her face, neck, trunk, and eyelids after the attack by Ryan - who had also stabbed her in the back, left her with a brain injury, and scalded her with boiling water.
Mr Fehin, who said he was too in fear of Stokes to intervene, eventually managed to escape prior to the fire and initially raised the alarm with gardai. “In treatment I learned this: fight, flight or freeze. I just got up and instinct kicked in. I found out the next day my whole front door was barricaded so I don’t know how I got out the front door. But I did.”
Ms Lee says she then lived in fear for years up to this case that Stokes, who was initially charged with attempted murder, would get out on bail and finish the job. “I lost everything. I lost all my clothes, furniture and photos. But I’m not a victim. I am a survivor,” she said. “He tried to take over my home,” she said. Ms Lee says she can still vividly remember the moment Stokes poured the ammonia acid in her face three times before throwing boiling hot water over her back.
“I was in the burns unit and I couldn’t feel from here down. I could barely see. But my brain was working and I thought I’m still alive, I can still talk.”
