The HEA said just 15% of disadvantaged students stay in education compared with 25% of affluent graduates

Head of performance evaluation with the HEA Valerie Harvey said that at undergraduate level, 70% were in employment nine months after leaving college and that does not change much with socio-economic status. However, she said, the difference is seen in those who go on to further study, with just 15% of disadvantaged students staying in education compared with 25% of affluent graduates.

For the first time data on socioeconomic status has been added, which shows the extent to which graduates come from a relatively more affluent or disadvantaged area. This is based on"deprivation index scores," she said. Graduates are divided into one of four groups based on these scores, whether graduates are disadvantaged marginally below average, marginally above average, or affluent, and then from this outcomes can be seen.

"So, the student population is first of all, more affluent than the general Irish population, and then we also have to think about how that global picture actually varies when we dig into it, so postgraduates tend to be more affluent than undergraduates.""For example, if we look at undergraduates after graduation, about 9% of disadvantaged graduates earn more than €40,000 per year.
