We've tried A LOT of hacks—but this one is our favorite.
In a fit of spring cleaning last year, I pulled out every single jar, determined to give them each a place in a perfectly alphabetical system. Cloves go after cinnamon. Baharat before berbere. And for about a week, it stuck. But then I got a new jar of thyme flowers, and I decided I needed both whole cardamom and ground. There weren’t spots in between the jars, or room for expansion. I started shoving things wherever they fit, and soon the alphabet unraveled. I couldn’t find anything.
The answer arrived in the form of a sheet of stickers, which wandered into my kitchen the way most of my six-year-old’s art supplies do. “What if each spicehave just one space?” my husband asked. I saw where he was going. If the spices were grouped into categories—say, herbs with one color sticker, chiles with another—then anyone who was cleaning up the kitchen could return a jar to the correct general area without any advanced cooking knowledge.
I divided my spices into a handful of categories, and I haven’t looked back since. Or, more accurately, I haven’t looked and looked and looked for a spice and been unable to find it in my moment of need. I use loose flavor characteristics as an organizational guide—there’s spicy, there’s herbal, and my ‘savory’ collection includes powdered mushrooms, granulated garlic and onion, and cheddar cheese powder—though you could also categorize by cuisine.
