Sophia and her sister, Bailey, were getting ready for school on what began as a typical Wednesday morning. Now, the prescient sense that her life is about to change forever has set her nerves on fire.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The loud banging on the family’s front door grows more urgent, and Sophia can tell by the look on her dad’s face that something is wrong. He’s calm. But even at 10 years old, she can read it in his eyes.
She hopes that’s the end of it, but the officers direct Sophia, Bailey and their mother to the couch and tell them to sit down.Realizing that both of her parents are being arrested, Sophia reaches into her bag for her phone before her mom stops her abruptly and tells her not to take anything out of her bag. Both sisters are now crying, their mom trying to comfort them in vain.
By the time Sophia and Bailey make it on school grounds, the team is already waiting at the front door, forming a front line of support for whatever the girls need, whether that be a warm breakfast, one-on-one counseling, or a new set of clean clothes. This response team is part of the school’s crisis management plan, which has Greene at the helm, not only developing the strategies but managing day-of logistics when the plan is activated.
Members of the crisis response team continue to work behind the scenes. Ms. Simpkins gathers necessities for the girls, who had to leave their home with only their backpacks. Luckily, she knows them so well that she is aware of their clothing sizes and sense of fashion. Thankfully, Ms. Simpkins was able to contact the girls’ Aunt Lynn, who is on her way to the school. Sophia asks if I’ll wait with them until Lynn arrives.
