It’s been two years since the Poarch Band of Creek Indians hosted its Thanksgiving Pow Wow. This year’s Pow Wow— which runs from Nov. 24 to 25, marks the 50th anniversary of the ceremonial gathering on Poarch’s reservation lands.
The annual celebration of Native American dance, songs, and culture was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.
In the 1980′s, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians opened its doors and extended invitations to welcome all Native American tribes, as well as the general public. The goal-- create an opportunity for everyone to experience the rich history and traditions of the First Nations on the Poarch’s original tribal reservation land.
“We’re really expecting a large turnout since we haven’t had anything in a couple of years,” said Blackburn. “So, we just kind of upped the scale a little bit on our end to make sure we can accommodate everybody.”Gates to the Pow Wow open at 10 a.m. both days. The most popular events are the dance competitions, where members of more than 20 tribal nations across the U.S. perform indigenous dances in authentic regalia.
Another highlight is the annual crowning of the Poarch Creek Indian Princesses. Once crowned, the princesses will serve as ambassadors for the tribe throughout the year at public events, as well as tribal gatherings in Alabama and around the nation. This year, the princesses will be crowned on Thanksgiving Day.If Blackburn had to describe the Pow Wow in one word, he’d call the celebration “spectacular.
