At 81, the former county judge has a lot left in the tank, and lots to share.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff talks about his career and passion for sports during an interview at his office, Monday, Aug. 8, 2022. First appointed county judge in 2001 he was elected to the position five times. He’ll retire on December 31 after 50 years of public service.SAN ANTONIO — It is a Wednesday afternoon, and Nelson Wolff is typing away on a Apple desktop, tapping into the expertise of more than 40 years of experience as a statesman.

He’s preparing to pass on all of his knowledge in public policy, business and even health — the hard lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic — onto the next generation of college students. Maloney and Wolff have been friends for more than 40 years since the judge spent time in the state Legislature from 1971 to 1975.

“What’s amazing to me is Nelson’s not only really good company, but he’s very modest about what he’s done. He doesn’t take himself so seriously, but his work is serious for him. Public service has been his life.” He’s not far from his old job of more than two decades, about four city blocks away. But, he plans to keep his hands completely off the steering wheel going forward.
