A divided, tearful Colorado Senate surprised itself Friday afternoon when it narrowly passed a Republican bill that seeks to require hospitals to allow more patients to have visitors during health emergencies.

Sen. Kerry Donovan, a Vail Democrat, talked about fighting to get be able to be with her ailing grandmother during the pandemic, and why it mattered that someone was in that assisted living room physically — not merely on video. Donovan is convinced that having family in the room kept her grandma alive a little bit longer.

Douglas County Republican Chris Holbert, the Senate minority leader, said he couldn’t imagine anyone “in their right mind” keeping loved ones apart during illness. He wondered aloud how he’d feel if he or his wife were sick or dying, and health facility staff tried to keep them apart.Lobbyists for health systems, including Centura Health and the Colorado Hospital Association, have lately been working lawmakers to oppose the bill.
