With tough opening slate finished, UTSA looks to regroup, plan for future
Texas running back Bijan Robinson carries a UTSA defender on his back for a touchdown on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium. Texas defeated UTSA 41-20UTSA coach Jeff Traylor woke up at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, and he walked through the doors of the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence about 20 minutes later.
As the Roadrunners look to recover and regroup with the start of the Conference USA season two weeks away, Traylor reiterated to the players that sticking to the Triangle of Toughness brand won’t guarantee success, but it gives them the best shot. “Obviously we played our behinds off against Texas, so the legs were a little heavy,” offensive lineman Terrell Haynes said. “It’s always a blessing when coach takes periods off practice. We have to maximize that, not repeating stuff, and perfect execution.”
Smith warmed up for Saturday’s game against Texas but was held out for precautionary reasons, Traylor said. Seven of the players listed on the injury report are offensive linemen, Traylor said, forcing UTSA to consider moving players from other position groups to fill the gap. Traylor said pushing through the heat of the three-game stretch “that nobody would ever hope to go through” has made the players “battle-tested” and helped the coaching staff learn to communicate in different environments.
