He questioned whether intelligence was overlooked, if proper actions were not taken, or if some crucial information was lost. He stated that authorities were well aware of the Real IRA's threat to public safety and the peace process, and they believed they had the capacity to track the group's activities through phone intercepts, car registrations, and other methods. Ahern believes there is no doubt that the authorities possessed significant intelligence on the Real IRA prior to the bombing. However, he posits the critical questions to be answered are: Did they have sufficient intelligence that day? Was that intelligence lost? And if so, why? He expressed optimism that these crucial questions will be addressed in the coming months
