Bertie Ahern says Johnson's sacking of 'outstanding' NI secretary is 'vindictive'
Former taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said the shock firing of Northern Ireland secretary Julian Smith is “vindictive” and slammed UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for the decision, saying it was “sour grapes”.
He added: "I think a bad thing for a prime minister ever to have is to be vindictive, it doesn’t serve you well. He said: “He really worked hard. The work that Simon and he did on the institutions on getting them back up together.“The people liked him and understood what he was at.” Aherne added that he is “more worried” now about the Withdrawal Agreement in relation to Northern Ireland following Smith’s sacking.
