Minister Seán Canney proposes using artificial intelligence and existing road cameras to quickly detect and respond to wrong-way driving incidents on Irish motorways. This initiative, coupled with forthcoming legislative changes, aims to make such dangerous behavior intolerable and ensure public safety.
To alert the public more quickly to wrong-way driving on Irish motorways and to help gardai catch the drivers involved, AI technology and the existing road camera network could be used.
This was revealed by Minister of State for road safety Seán Canney after an initial meeting with gardai, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Road Safety Authority. The Independent TD stated that it is crucial to make wrong-way motorway driving an 'intolerable' act. He explained that the M50 and the road to Cork are well-covered with cameras, and AI technology could be leveraged to detect these incidents more rapidly and assist law enforcement in their response.
In addition to technological improvements, Canney announced that his department would meet with Department of Justice officials to draft new legislation, indicating that the current penalties for such offenses are likely to be toughened. The goal is to have this new legislation in place by the end of the year
