Dr.
Ryan emphasized that while plagiarism has always been an issue, AI tools amplify this problem to a significant degree. He recalled a specific instance where a student submitted one of his own online articles as homework, completely unaware of its origin. Dr. Ryan, who leads the Technology Enhanced Learning Support Service at Limerick and Clare ETB and offers courses to teachers on AI integration in schools, acknowledged that AI tools are not foolproof for students seeking shortcuts. He pointed out that AI often produces inaccurate information, which teachers, being subject matter experts, can hopefully identify. However, students, lacking prior knowledge, may struggle to differentiate between accurate and fabricated information generated by AI. To combat this challenge, Dr. Ryan suggests several measures. He recommends handwritten assignments, particularly when exams are also handwritten, as a way to detect AI-generated text. Additionally, he advocates for discussions about student work, allowing teachers to assess their genuine understanding of the subject matter. He believes these strategies can help mitigate the risks associated with AI-assisted cheating while encouraging students to engage more deeply with their learning
