Penalties levied in effort to lower the number of people with no valid travel documents applying for international protection
Gardaí have fined airlines €1.4 million in the past year for allowing passengers to board without passports, as part of a state crackdown.
The state has been trying to reduce the number of people turning up without passports who apply for international protection. There is a penalty fine of €1,500 in place for airlines who are found to have allowed passengers to board without a passport or valid visa.
