Alabama’s major airports follow the lead of airlines after a federal judge’s decision voided the national mandate requiring the wearing of masks on airplanes. Airports in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile have all lifted their mask mandates.

Chris Curry, Mobile Airport Authority president, said Mobile Regional Airport lifted the mask requirement Monday night following the Transportation Security Administration’s direction.

The mask requirement for travelers was the target of months of lobbying from the airlines. The carriers argued that effective air filters on modern planes make transmission of the virus during a flight highly unlikely. “With the removal of this federal requirement, there are currently no regulations requiring masks at the Birmingham‐Shuttlesworth International Airport,” the Authority stated. “While passengers, employees and visitors are not required to wear a mask while at the airport, passengers are encouraged to check with their airline to determine whether a mask will be required while on the plane.”
