When the Crimson Tide women's soccer team meets UCLA Friday in the College Cup semifinal, it’ll be a new page of history for the program. “They walked through a collection of blue bloods to be where they are,” UCLA's Anson Dorrance said of Alabama's run.
In a sense, Anson Dorrance is the Geno Auriemma of NCAA women’s soccer.
Until a year ago, Alabama had never even won an NCAA game while the other three account for 25 of the 39 titles since the NCAA’s first tournament in 1982. The Crimson Tide got to this point with an aggressive pressing style and a 2.92-goal average that ranks second nationally. Acknowledging the history and tradition of the three other contenders and the context of his run, Hart said an Alabama win “would be a pretty cool statement.”
UCLA had early-season road wins over Duke and North Carolina but had a few close calls in the NCAA tournament. Like Alabama’s quarterfinal win over Duke, the Bruins needed overtime to beat Virginia two games after a second-round win over UCF required penalty kicks.
