The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said Bruce Lee Jones, 41, of Collinsville, has been charged with the murder of Sandra Jelks, 62.
DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said Collinsville police, fire medics and DeKalb County deputies responded to a call on Watts Drive at about 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, and found Jelks dead in the living room of her home. In addition to being Jones’ mother, she was also the mother of a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office employee.
Because of this, Welden said, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, 9th Circuit District Attorney’s Office and Jacksonville State University-Center for Applied Forensics were requested to investigate the death. Our DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office family has suffered a tragic loss and we ask for your prayers for the family of Sandra Jelks and the employee who lost a mother,” Welden said in a statement.
