At Alamo Helicopter Tours, Jose Corona never gets tired of seeing San Antonio from above

Alamo Helicopters Owner and Pilot Jose Corona is pictured at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio, Texas, on Feb. 10, 2022. Alamo Helicopters is a company that offers flights above San Antonio for tourists and locals alike.Jose Corona began dreaming of flying when he was 3 or 4 years old. That’s when he watched an Army helicopter land in his neighborhood, pick up an injured patient and take off for a hospital.

In 2016, Corona and his wife, Betty, purchased the company from its prior owners, also a husband-and-wife team. The Coronas now oversee a staff of eight, including five pilots, in San Antonio and Austin. They offer sightseeing tours and flying lessons as well as charter flights, often to business executives shuttling between meetings in the two cities.

Corona recently sat for an interview to discuss the decision to buy the company, the reaction Houston and Dallas residents have upon seeing San Antonio from above, and the recovery of the city’s tourism industry from the darkest days of the pandemic. The following has been edited for brevity and clarity. It was exciting and strange. My concern was, “What’s going to happen with the pilots?” My worry was that everyone was going to lose their job.
