Alan, who was best known as the keyboardist and guitarist for rock band The Associates, died"peacefully at home", his sons Callum and Hamish Rankine announced on Facebook earlier today.A statement read:"It's with great sadness that my brother, Hamish, and I announce the passing of our father, Alan Rankine."He was a beautiful, kind and loving man who will be sorely missed.
"The Facebook community meant a lot to our dad so we'd like to keep this account live and we invite you to celebrate his life on this page."Alan, who was born in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, began his career with the cabaret band Caspian which became The Associates with singer Billy Mackenzie. They recorded three albums together, The Afternoon Punch , Fourth Drawer Down and Sulk before he left the band in 1982.Alan later worked as a lecturer at Stow College in Glasgow until 2010 where he helped students to set up their own in-house record label, Electric Honey, which launched the careers of bands such as Biffy Clyro and Snow Patrol.
